Forming The Free Store Project during the COVID-19 pandemic, Myles Smutney set out to unite & empower New Yorkers.
Working tirelessly, Myles has built community infrastructures wherever her initiative is in place. The Free Stores offer a circular solution to excess and apathy that promotes civic care, kindness and camaraderie.
Public sharing hubs establish a solidarity economy wherever they exist, when strangers become neighbors who work together to reduce waste and restore both their neighborhood and hope.
We can't win this race without your help. Flyering, word-of-mouth, and donating are all ways of helping us achieve our goals- together. Sign our petition to be on the June ballot. Email to find us.
Myles is an artist and activist who crafts things and environs meant to empower others. Founding The Free Store Project in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, she has built a network of public sharing hubs which offer both resources and hope to NYC residents. Helping to rebuild New York City from the block up, these kiosks work to fight apathy, waste and help bridge the economic gap. At each location strangers become neighbors who share items, encouragement and resources that carry each other during dark times. She implores you to be the change you want to see in the world and reminds you that if you build it, they will come.
She stepped up last summer as Director of University Settlement's ROAR! Festival, a summer-long weekly outdoor festival with over 200 hours of FREE programming for Lower East Side residents of all ages. Earlier this month she was awarded Community Circularity Champion for the first ever Circularity Day NYC, presented by Barnard College, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine and Columbia Climate School.
